it continues to cause floodsing in upper new england. this is in from vermont where they turned streams into fast moving rivers. 14 people quickly evacuate and much of the eastern seaboard suffered downed trees and power outages. the flooding is causing problems tonight. in new york the subway is still shut down and transportation leaders warn that tomorrow's commute will be difficult at the

very best we have a live report from nbc's steve handelsman in new york. we want to go to sfo where dozens of flights were canceled because of hurricane irene. hello, monty. >> reporter: good evening. here at sfo, a total of 87 departing flights were canceled and 46 of those flights were canceled today. all weekend long passengers have been scrambling to book other flights. all the airlines have been flying to locations on the east coast such as washington, d.c., baltimore and philadelphia the first flight is the red eye. there is a huge back up and thousands of people getting back to the east coast, some are being told they will wait several days to get out of here. we found one woman inside here at the united counter trying to get back to new jersey.

she was told she couldn't get a flight until saturday. >> i know it's mother nature and they probably have nothing to do with it, but i hope they can try to get organized. >> i missed my vacation with my daughter and i missed changing the flights and i said come hell or high water. my daughter is having a staycation which is not the same thing. >> reporter: tomorrow the airs are planning a full schedule. there two cancellations from sfo to newark and to jfk. it will take a matter of days to fully recover from this. nbc bay area news. >> one of the things that this didn't have the east coast travel. the ripple effect. >> we thought dozens of delayed flights not on the east coast,

the situation is right different. such as hawaii and houston and oregon seem to be running on time. it seems like the airlines have been able to fix that part of the problem. >> good to know. thanks a lot, monty. >> we are keeping track of irene's past. >> downgraded to a tropical storm, they made landfall. drier air working on the back of the system, weakening in time for landfall. it's still a potent system, a tropical storm with 50 mile per hour sustained winds and near the center, it's still very blustery around new york city and the winds shifting towards the north and northwest. the center of the storm is on the border between vermont and new hampshire. mainly a big wind maker. the rain continues to push north through portions of maine. looks like the system will be about 12 to 24-hours to exit

completely. they will be back in a few minutes to talk about our weather which is looking very, very quiet in comparison. >> from air national guard reservives, they loaded a plane ready in the wake of irene when the mission was canceled this morning. the 129 unit had two helicopters and 50 crew members and life-saving equipment loaded on to a plane. they planned to fly to mcguire airport when the mission was called off. >> this mission today, we had about 50 personnel deploying to new jersey. the 40 sent today will not be sent in time. >> as he mentioned, the crew members helped with the storm system and have been focusing on problems caused by floodwaters in the new jersey area.

while there wasn't as much need as expected for search and rescue crews on the ground, there is still plenty of damage on the east coast. steve handelsman joins us with a look from new york city. hello, steve. >> reporter: hello, diane. here on time square, it looks like we are back to normal here. this place is crowded with tourists. hardly thinking of the hurricane, but even though the death toll is reported to be at 20 and could go higher, this could have been far worse. that's the assessment here in new york and up and down the east coast. starting the clean up, this was central park. new york is draining tonight. rhode island is taking stock. >> not as bad as we expected. much better. >> irene was a full-fledged cat one hurricane. this was long island this morning. >> pandemonium pretty much. crazy. >> at least 15 people were

reported killed from florida to new england. many by falling trees last night and today. flooding extended far inland near philadelphia. some rivers are still reported rising. now many of the million who is evacuated want to see if there is damage. hazel lowe in new york city. >> there were power outages and i don't know what to believe. >> charlie jones in north carolina. >> pay won't let us back in. you have to have a reenter pass. >> power out in maryland and half a million in north carolina and pennsylvania. many are not being allowed home. the feds expect second-guessing. >> yes, there is a lot of people saying why do i have to evacuate. >> the 300,000 plus were allowed back and the mayor defended the city's first ever forced evacuation. >> all in all, we are in good

shape. the steps that we took to prepare for whatever came our way. >> president obama praised the coordinated storm response. >> as i told governors and mayors across the affected areas, if they need something,y want to know about it. we will make sure we respond as quickly and effectively as possible. >> the whole east coast is in good shape after a three-day assault by hurricane irene. the main danger remaining from irene is her torrential rains. rivers that are still rising, diane, and floods could get worse. >> absolutely. thanks, steve. we are hearing that tomorrow's commute in new york city can be challenging. any advice on how people are supposed to get to work or not do that tomorrow? what's up? >> reporter: the problem is the subways have not reopened. the problem with that is some of the subway tubes sustained flooding. they have to inspect it all. high voltage down there and old,

old subway tunnels that do this and in the low areas, there could be water. they will come back online one at a time. that's the problem getting into and out of new york. getting into and out of the east coast is different and maybe worse. air travel has been utterly snarled by three days, four days of a big hurricane. something like 11,000 flights have been canceled. the airlines for obvious reasons took most of the aircraft out of the east coast. now it will be reset up with an enormous backlog of people who want to fly and get out of places like new york and already we are looking at a back up. they are saying if you book a flight now. you may not get out of new york until wednesday. >> we had similar stories hereof lks trying to get back not until saturday. thanks very much. >> stay with us for continuing coverage of tropical storm irene on air and online.

raiders fans may feel like trouble makers with all the police presence. they were prompt bide last weekend's violence at candlestick. a look for it.

>> they are tired of getting a bad rap. they are sad about what happened last week. it is unfortunate, but those are trouble makers causing a problem, not raiders fans. true raiders fans come to the team to enjoy the sport and good company. they also drew attention that the rules that were just implemented at candlestick park yesterday had been in place for years now. these are rules this is one that put them in. the alameda county sheriff worked closely with oakland police and the raiders to coordinate the effort. raiders fans say they were upset to hear about the violence that happened at the raiders and niners game. that's the preseason game between the two teams.

>> i think the rivalry is too hard and nobody has control. i don't think it's a good thing. >> true fans, we have been looking for six years and never had problems. with the raider and niner game, i brought friends and family. we have all come down here for a good time. >> i would rather see them continue to play. you see them three or four years. it's nice to see them on a regular basis oakland made significant security improvements over several years and according to him and fans made a very big difference. here tailgaters are allowed in five hours before the game starts. as you can see, it cleared out now that the game started. there were stragglers, but we saw police and security quickly come around to chlorthem out and make sure they are at the game and if they don't have a ticket, they leave.

cruised along the highway a little bit too blap a planecrashed on to highway 29 south of napa. the plane made the emergency landing before 1:00 as you can see here. the photographer was on the scene and took the pictures and said the plane was having trouble landing. clearly. he reports it scraping along the highway and clipping the back end of a car as well. the plane came to rest as you can see. two people on the plane were able to walk away from the crash. the person in the car was injured and had just minor injuries. now for a look at what's coming up in sports.
